The bottom line
Clover sells bundles of hardware and software, and you pay for them one of two ways. You rent them for a monthly fee over 36 months, or you buy the hardware up front and pay a monthly software fee.
Card rates start at 2.3% + 10¢ in person. But the cheapest retail bundle pays 2.6% + 10¢, and a 36-month subscription keeps billing unless you give 30 days’ notice before it ends.

Who it’s for
- Retail shops and restaurants that want a full setup. Clover publishes separate pricing for dining, quick service, retail, professional services, personal services and home and field services.
- Owners who’d rather not pay for hardware up front. The subscription option spreads the cost over 36 months.
- Small shops that need only the basics. Retail Basic is $16 a month for 36 months, or $349 to buy.
Who should skip it
- Owners who don’t want a long commitment. The subscriptions run 36 months, and Clover’s hardware promotion “Requires a 3-year contract.”
- Anyone who forgets renewal dates. If you don’t buy or return the equipment at the end, the subscription keeps billing at the same monthly charge.
- Businesses buying through a bank. Clover’s site prices only apply on Clover.com, so a bank’s quote can be different.
The catch
Subscriptions extend on their own. Clover says that if you don’t choose to buy or return your equipment, “your subscription term will be extended at the same monthly charge.”
You need 30 days’ notice. Clover says “you’ll need to inform Clover at least 30 days before the end of the subscription term.”
The seller sets the terms. Clover says contract terms and termination fees “can vary based on your service provider,” whether that’s Clover Direct, a bank like Citi, PNC or Wells Fargo, or one of more than 3,000 other financial institutions.
The promotion has strings. Clover’s hardware promotion needs a 3-year contract and “$10,000 or greater in card transactions within the first four billing cycles.”
The cheapest bundle has the higher rate. Retail Basic pays 2.6% + 10¢ in person, while the Standard and Advanced bundles pay 2.3% + 10¢.
Fast cash costs extra. Rapid Deposit, which gets you funds within minutes, costs 1.75%. Clover doesn’t publish its standard payout timing on its pricing pages.
Kitchen screens cost monthly. Clover lists its KDS screens at $799 or $899, plus $25 a month per device.
What it costs at your size
These are estimates. They use Clover.com’s listed prices, the rent-for-36-months option, and assume every payment is a card tapped, dipped or swiped in person.
Example 1: Retail Basic, $10,000 a month, 400 payments.
- Rate: 2.6% × $10,000 = $260
- Per-sale fee: 400 × 10¢ = $40
- Bundle: $16
- Estimated total: $316 a month
Example 2: Retail Standard, the same $10,000 and 400 payments.
- Rate: 2.3% × $10,000 = $230
- Per-sale fee: 400 × 10¢ = $40
- Bundle: $180
- Estimated total: $450 a month
The lower rate on Standard saves $30 a month at this size, but the bundle costs $164 more. Standard makes sense for the features, not the rate, unless your sales are much higher.
Over 36 months, renting Retail Standard costs 36 × $180 = $6,480. Buying it costs $1,899 plus 36 × $84.95 = $3,058.20, or $4,957.20 in total. After the term, the rental keeps billing unless you act. Clover’s page doesn’t say the monthly software fee on a bought bundle ever stops.
