Stripe’s US rates

Stripe has one standard price list, with no plans to choose from. Everything below is from Stripe’s US pricing page.

Payment typeStripe’s fee
Online, domestic card2.9% + 30¢
In person, domestic card2.7% + 5¢
Manually entered cardadds 0.5%, so 3.4% + 30¢
International cardadds 1.5%
Currency conversionadds 1%
Tap to Payadds 10¢ per authorization
ACH Direct Debit0.8%, capped at $5

The in-person rate covers “credit cards, debit cards, and digital wallets,” according to Stripe. Stripe charges per “successful transaction,” and says it does “not charge setup fees, monthly fees, or any other hidden fees like closure fees.”

For larger businesses, Stripe offers custom pricing, including interchange-plus and volume discounts. It says this is “available for businesses with large payments volume or unique business models.” Stripe doesn’t publish those rates.

Worked examples

All of these use Stripe’s published rates. They’re our arithmetic, not Stripe’s.

A $100 online order. 2.9% of $100 is $2.90, plus 30¢, so $3.20. You keep $96.80.

A $10 online order. 29¢ plus 30¢ is 59¢. That’s 5.9% of the sale, because the fixed fee does most of the work.

A $100 order with an international card. 2.9% + 1.5% = 4.4%, plus 30¢, so $4.70. If currency conversion is also needed, add another 1%: $5.70.

A $100 phone order, typed in by hand. 3.4% + 30¢ = $3.70.

A $50 sale in person, on a Stripe reader. 2.7% of $50 is $1.35, plus 5¢, so $1.40. With Tap to Pay on a phone, add 10¢: $1.50.

A month online. Say you take $10,000 across 200 orders. That’s $290 in percentage fees plus $60 in fixed fees, so $350. Your effective rate is 3.5%, higher than the 2.9% headline, because of the 30¢ on each order.

The fees the calculator doesn’t show

  • Disputes. $15 for each dispute you receive, plus a $15 countered fee if you respond manually. Stripe refunds the countered fee only if you win.
  • Instant Payouts. 1.5% of the amount, with a 50¢ minimum. Standard US payouts settle on a two-business-day schedule.
  • Buy now, pay later. Klarna costs 5.99% + 30¢.
  • Hardware. Stripe Reader M2 is $59, the S700 is $299 and the T600 is $329. Cellular data is an optional $10 a month per reader.
  • POS software. Stripe’s pricing page lists readers but no POS plan. It says its readers can “integrate with hundreds of third-party POS systems.” If you need one, its cost is extra.

The calculator also shows what to charge to take home an exact amount. Before you pass fees on to customers, check the rules that apply to your business and your state.

Stripe vs Square, at a glance

On a $100 online order, Stripe charges $3.20. Square charges $3.60 on its free plan, or $3.20 on its paid plans ($49 a month and up). In person, Stripe’s 2.7% + 5¢ is $2.75 on a $100 sale. Common questions

How much does Stripe charge per transaction?

Stripe lists 2.9% + 30¢ per successful online payment with a domestic card, and 2.7% + 5¢ in person. Manually entered cards add 0.5%. On a $100 online order, the fee is $3.20 and you keep $96.80. International cards add 1.5%, and currency conversion adds another 1%. Stripe lists no setup or monthly fee.

How much does Stripe charge for a dispute?

Stripe charges $15 for each dispute you receive. If you respond to it manually, there's a second $15 countered fee. Stripe says you get the countered fee back if you win, but not if you lose. So a lost dispute that you fought costs $30 in fees, on top of the money returned to the customer.

Why is Stripe expensive on small payments?

Because of the fixed 30¢ online. On a $10 online payment, Stripe's fee is 29¢ plus 30¢, or 59¢. That's 5.9% of the sale. On a $100 payment, the same fee structure works out to 3.2%. If you sell lots of low-priced items online, the fixed fee matters more than the percentage.

Does Stripe charge a monthly fee?

Not on standard pricing. Stripe says it does "not charge setup fees, monthly fees, or any other hidden fees like closure fees." Optional extras do cost money, such as $10 a month per Terminal reader for cellular data, and hardware like the $59 Reader M2. Stripe also offers custom pricing for businesses with large payment volume.
