Who it’s for

  • Market stalls, food trucks and pop-ups. The Free plan has no monthly fee, so a slow or off-season month costs nothing.
  • Low-volume sellers. You “simply pay the one time hardware cost and start transacting,” SumUp says.
  • Anyone who wants next-day money on a free plan. SumUp says next-day payouts come with every plan.

Who should skip it

  • Businesses with lots of online or phone orders. Those cost 3.5% + 15¢.
  • Owners who want hardware prices up front. SumUp’s pricing page doesn’t list them.
  • Sellers chasing a lower in-person rate. PayPal POS lists 2.29% + 9¢ in person with no monthly fee.

The catch

Online and typed-in cards cost more. 3.5% + 15¢, against 2.6% + 10¢ in person.

Hardware prices aren’t on the pricing page. The Free plan depends on buying a reader, so ask for the price before you sign up.

Contract terms aren’t published. SumUp’s US pricing page doesn’t state a term or a cancellation fee.

The page mixes in euro text. SumUp’s US pricing page also carries FAQ text in euros, such as “€259 per year,” that doesn’t match the US rate table. We used the US rate table.

What it costs at your size

These are estimates. They use SumUp’s published US rates.

Example 1: Free plan, $3,000 a month in person, 200 payments.

  • Rate: 2.6% × $3,000 = $78
  • Per-sale fee: 200 × 10¢ = $20
  • Monthly fee: $0
  • Estimated total: $98 a month, an effective rate of about 3.3%

Example 2: the same month plus $500 online over 20 orders.

  • Online rate: 3.5% × $500 = $17.50
  • Online per-order fee: 20 × 15¢ = $3
  • Estimated total: $118.50 a month

On POS Plus, add $49, for $147 a month in Example 1. Try your own numbers in the fee calculator.

Compared with

  • Square: $0 a month on Free, with 2.6% + 15¢ in person, so 5¢ more per sale than SumUp. Square publishes its hardware prices, from $59 for a reader, and says there are no locked-in contracts.
  • PayPal POS: 2.29% + 9¢ in person with a free POS app and no monthly fee. On Example 1, that’s about $86.70, by our math. Watch its $20 chargeback fee and its terms that let it raise rates.

Common questions

How much does SumUp charge per transaction?

SumUp's US pricing page lists 2.6% + 10¢ for in-person card payments, and 3.5% + 15¢ for online or manually entered payments. The rates are the same on every plan, including Free. So a $20 in-person sale costs 62¢ in fees, and a $20 online order costs 85¢, by our math.

Does SumUp have a monthly fee?

Not on the Free plan, which is $0 a month. SumUp says you "simply pay the one time hardware cost and start transacting." Paid plans add POS features: POS Plus is $49 a month, SumUp POS starts at $99, and the loyalty plans Connect Plus and Connect Pro are $269 and $349 a month.

How fast does SumUp pay out?

SumUp says it "offers next-day payouts with all of our products, regardless of your plan." So you don't need a paid plan to get your money the next day. We didn't find a faster payout option on its US pricing page. If you need same-day cash, ask SumUp whether it offers it and what it costs.

Is SumUp cheaper than Square?

For in-person sales, yes, by 5¢ a sale. Both charge 2.6% on their $0 plans, but SumUp's fixed fee is 10¢ and Square Free's is 15¢. On 200 sales a month, that's $10 less at SumUp, by our math. Online, Square Free charges 3.3% + 30¢ and SumUp 3.5% + 15¢, so it depends on order size.
