Who it’s for
- Online shops that also sell in person. Your products, stock and customers sit in one system.
- Small shops with simple counter needs. POS Lite is included in every plan.
- Sellers who already use Shopify Payments. The rates above only apply when you do.
Who should skip it
- Shops that want to keep their current processor. Shopify adds 2% per sale on Basic when you use another provider.
- Busy stores on a tight budget. Staff roles, inventory management and returns at any location need POS Pro, at $89 a month per location.
- In-person-only businesses. You pay a monthly plan fee for an online store you may not use.
The catch
Using another processor costs extra. The third-party fee is 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.
Premium cards cost more online. On Basic, premium cards are 3.5% + 30¢ online, against 2.9% + 30¢ for standard cards.
International cards online add 1%.
POS Pro is billed yearly. Shopify lists it at $89 a month per location, billed yearly. The US page doesn’t show a monthly-billed price.
Marketplace orders can add a fee. Shopify charges 1%, up to $99 a month, on synced marketplace orders over 50.
PayPal costs more. Shopify lists PayPal Wallet payments starting at 3.49% + 49¢.
Payout timing isn’t stated. Shopify’s payout help page doesn’t list a US payout period.
What it costs at your size
These are estimates. They use Shopify’s published Basic plan rates, billed monthly, through Shopify Payments, with standard US cards.
Example 1: in person only, $10,000 a month, 400 payments.
- Rate: 2.6% × $10,000 = $260
- Per-sale fee: 400 × 10¢ = $40
- Plan: $39
- Estimated total: $339 a month
Example 2: $5,000 in person over 200 payments, and $5,000 online over 100 orders.
- In person: 2.6% × $5,000 = $130, plus 200 × 10¢ = $20, for $150
- Online: 2.9% × $5,000 = $145, plus 100 × 30¢ = $30, for $175
- Plan: $39
- Estimated total: $364 a month
If your store needs POS Pro, add $89 a month, billed yearly. If you used another processor instead of Shopify Payments, add 2% × $10,000 = $200 a month on top of that processor’s own fees.
Compare those totals with your current costs in the fee calculator.
Compared with
- Square: 2.6% + 15¢ in person on a $0 a month Free plan, with online sales at 3.3% + 30¢. Cheaper if you mostly sell in person.
- Lightspeed: retail POS from $89 a month billed yearly, with 2.6% + 10¢ in person through Lightspeed Payments.
