The bottom line

Shopify is one system for your online store and your counter. On the Basic plan you pay $39 a month, plus 2.6% + 10¢ per in-person card sale and 2.9% + 30¢ per online payment through Shopify Payments.

Two costs can sneak up on you. Retail-store features need POS Pro at $89 a month per location, and using any processor other than Shopify Payments adds a 2% fee on Basic.

Who it’s for

  • Online shops that also sell in person. Your products, stock and customers sit in one system.
  • Small shops with simple counter needs. POS Lite is included in every plan.
  • Sellers who already use Shopify Payments. The rates above only apply when you do.

Who should skip it

  • Shops that want to keep their current processor. Shopify adds 2% per sale on Basic when you use another provider.
  • Busy stores on a tight budget. Staff roles, inventory management and returns at any location need POS Pro, at $89 a month per location.
  • In-person-only businesses. You pay a monthly plan fee for an online store you may not use.

The catch

Using another processor costs extra. The third-party fee is 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.

Premium cards cost more online. On Basic, premium cards are 3.5% + 30¢ online, against 2.9% + 30¢ for standard cards.

International cards online add 1%.

POS Pro costs extra per location. Shopify lists it at $89 a month per location, or $67 a month on a 12-month term (cancel early and you owe the rest of the term).

Hardware is priced separately. Shopify’s US hardware store lists the Tap & Chip Card Reader at $49, the POS Terminal at $349 and the Victa Mobile at $399. Tap to Pay on iPhone comes with every plan, so a phone can take cards with no reader at all. Compare readers from every provider in card terminals.

Marketplace orders can add a fee. Shopify charges 1%, up to $99 a month, on synced marketplace orders over 50.

PayPal costs more. Shopify lists PayPal Wallet payments starting at 3.49% + 49¢.

Payouts take at least 3 business days. Shopify’s payout timing page lists a minimum settlement time of 3 business days in the US.

What it costs at your size

These are estimates. They use Shopify’s published Basic plan rates, billed monthly, through Shopify Payments, with standard US cards.

Example 1: in person only, $10,000 a month, 400 payments.

  • Rate: 2.6% × $10,000 = $260
  • Per-sale fee: 400 × 10¢ = $40
  • Plan: $39
  • Estimated total: $339 a month

Example 2: $5,000 in person over 200 payments, and $5,000 online over 100 orders.

  • In person: 2.6% × $5,000 = $130, plus 200 × 10¢ = $20, for $150
  • Online: 2.9% × $5,000 = $145, plus 100 × 30¢ = $30, for $175
  • Plan: $39
  • Estimated total: $364 a month

If your store needs POS Pro, add $89 a month. If you used another processor instead of Shopify Payments, add 2% × $10,000 = $200 a month on top of that processor’s own fees.

Compare those totals with your current costs in the fee calculator.

Common questions

What are Shopify Payments fees?

On the Basic plan, Shopify lists 2.6% + 10¢ per in-person card sale, 2.9% + 30¢ per online payment with a standard card, and 3.5% + 30¢ online for premium cards. Typed-in cards in person are 3.5% + 10¢. International cards online add 1%. Rates drop on bigger plans, down to 2.3% + 10¢ in person on Plus.

How much is Shopify POS?

POS Lite is included in every Shopify plan. Basic is $39 a month, or $29 a month if you pay yearly. Grow is $105 a month and Advanced is $399. If your store needs POS Pro, Shopify lists it as an extra $89 a month per location, or $67 a month on a 12-month term (cancel early and you owe the rest of the term).

Can I use a different payment processor with Shopify?

Yes, but Shopify charges an extra fee on every sale when you do. It's 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. That is on top of whatever the other processor charges you, so add both together when you compare costs.

Features like staff roles, inventory management and returns at any location need it. It costs $89 a month per location on top of your plan, or $67 a month on a 12-month term (cancel early and you owe the rest of the term).
