Each app's standard published rate. The invoice and monthly columns assume every invoice is paid by card online at the standard rate (an estimate). Amex, business cards, keyed-in cards and buy-now-pay-later cost more at several apps, below. "Not published" means the app doesn't publish that rate, so we don't guess one.

The worked example (an estimate)
Take a 5-person crew on Jobber Connect at $199 a month. It sends 50 invoices a month averaging $400, and every customer pays online by card:
- Card fees: 50 × ($400 × 2.9% + 30¢) = 50 × $11.90 = $595 a month, or $7,140 a year.
- Software: $199 a month, or $2,388 a year.
The card fees are about 3 times the software. If the same customers paid by bank at Jobber™’s 1%, the fees would drop to $200 a month. Assumptions: standard cards only, no Amex or business cards, no instant payouts. Your mix will differ: put your own numbers in the calculator.
Leads cost money too. What a trades business really pays adds up card fees, software and leads for a 5-person crew, at every app with complete prices.
Five ways to pay less
1. Ask for bank payments on big invoices. Bank (ACH) payments cost 1% at Jobber, 1% at Housecall Pro and 1% at Workiz, 1% + 30¢ at Kickserv and 1% + 25¢ at FieldPulse. Joist charges 1%, capped at $15, so a $3,000 invoice costs $15.00 instead of $30.00 at a flat 1%. Most other apps publish no bank rate.
2. Take payment in person where it’s cheaper. Kickserv charges 3.9% + 30¢ for online card payments but 2.9% + 30¢ with Tap to Pay on site. Housecall Pro’s in-person rate is 2.59% against 2.99% online.
3. Pass the fee on, where the law allows it. Tradify lets you “pass the credit card fee on to your customer”, Kickserv can add a percentage or flat fee to invoices paid by card or bank, Joist lets you pass processing fees to clients on all plans, and FieldPulse offers separate card and bank prices. Rules differ by state and card network: read credit card surcharge rules first.
4. Skip instant payouts. Same-day pay costs extra: 1% at Jobber, 1% at Housecall Pro (Instapay), 1.75% at Workiz (minimum 50¢ per payout). FieldPulse charges 0.5% for next-day funding.
5. Watch the expensive cards. Housecall Pro charges 3.49% for American Express and business cards, by any method. Kickserv says some accounts pay 5.2% + 30¢ for Amex. ServiceM8 charges 4.6% + 30¢ for international cards. If you bill commercial customers who pay by company card, these rates matter more than the headline rate.
When your app uses your own processor
GorillaDesk doesn’t process payments itself: it connects to your own Stripe or Square account, so you pay their published rates (the table shows Stripe’s). Yardbook also connects to your own Stripe account, and adds 1% to online payments on its free plan. With these apps you can shop for a processor; compare Stripe and Square, or run your card mix through our payments calculator.
The other apps set their own card rates for payments taken through the app, and those are the rates in the table.
Other fees on payments
- Disputes and chargebacks: ServiceM8 charges $15 per dispute. FieldPulse’s payments terms list $25 per chargeback, ACH return or dispute. Most apps don’t publish a dispute fee.
- Refunds: Joist doesn’t return its processing fee when you refund a customer.
- Buy now, pay later: Housecall Pro charges 4.99% for PayPal Pay Later and Klarna.
