Honest Fees

Fee calculator for eBay sellers

What eBay takes from your sale, and what lands in your account, by category and Store level.

Updated October 20, 2026 How we check prices Published by Ian Chang

The short answer: in most categories eBay takes 13.6% of the total sale (item price, shipping and sales tax) up to $7,500, plus a $0.40 per order fee ($0.30 if the order is $10 or less). There is no separate payment processing fee. On a $100 sale with free shipping, eBay keeps $14 and pays you $86.

$49.71

Fees $8.29, which is 14.3% of the $58.00 sale ($8.29 ÷ $58.00)

eBay takes its percentage on the whole amount the buyer pays: item, shipping and sales tax (0% here).

What eBay takes at $20, $100 and $1,000

Most categories, no Store, free shipping, no sales tax, buyer in the US.
SaleFees Share of the saleYou keep
$20.00 $3.12 15.6% $16.88
$100.00 $14.00 14.0% $86.00
$1,000.00 $136.40 13.6% $863.60

The per order fee is flat, so it weighs most on cheap items. On an $8 sale it adds $0.30 to a $1.09 final value fee, and eBay keeps 17.4% of the sale. Bundling small items into one listing pays the per order fee once.

eBay final value fees by category

Most categories pay the same rate, but a few pay much less or much more. The ones that change the answer the most:

  • Sneakers: athletic shoes sold for $150 or more pay 8% on the whole sale and no per order fee. Under $150 they pay the standard 13.6%.
  • Guitars and basses: 6.7% up to $7,500, about half the standard rate.
  • Books, movies and music: 15.3%, the highest standard rate in the no-Store table.
  • Handbags, jewelry and watches: higher rates on the first part of the sale, then lower rates on expensive items. Some bands apply to the whole sale, others only to the part above the breakpoint, so check the table.

eBay listing fees and Store plans

Without a Store you get 250 free listings a month, then each new listing costs $0.35 in most categories. From Basic up, a Store raises the free allowance and lowers the final value fee in most categories.

eBay Store prices and listing allowances. Both renewal options are charged monthly.
PlanMonthly renewal Yearly renewalFree fixed-price listings a month Insertion fee after that
No Store Free Free 250 $0.35
Starter Store $7.95 $4.95 250 $0.30
Basic Store $27.95 $21.95 1,000 $0.25
Premium Store $74.95 $59.95 10,000 $0.10
Anchor Store $349.95 $299.95 25,000 $0.05
Enterprise Store Not offered $2,999.95 100,000 $0.05

Basic and higher Stores also get extra free listings in select categories and lower final value fees in most categories (see the category tables above). Cancelling a yearly Store early costs a third of the remaining months' fees.

Is a Store worth it? In most categories a Basic Store cuts the final value fee from 13.6% to 12.7%. On yearly renewal ($21.95 a month), that saving covers the subscription once you sell about $2,439 a month in those categories (our estimate: subscription divided by the rate difference, before insertion-fee savings). Below that, no Store is cheaper unless you need more free listings. A Starter Store keeps the no-Store rates and the same 250 free listings; it only lowers the insertion fee after that, from $0.35 to $0.30. To find the cheapest plan for your own sales and listings, see which Store plan costs least at your volume.

The fees sellers miss

  • eBay charges on shipping and sales tax, not just your price. If the buyer pays $100 for the item, $15 shipping and 8% sales tax, eBay’s percentage applies to all $124.20. Raise shipping to cover it, or offer free shipping and price it in.
  • Selling abroad adds 1.65% of the total sale when the buyer is outside the US, unless the item ships through eBay International Shipping.
  • Promoted Listings charge the ad rate you pick on the whole sale when a buyer clicks your ad and buys within 30 days.
  • A Below Standard account pays a surcharge on the next month’s sales.
  • Refunds: the per order fee is not credited in most refund cases, and insertion fees are not refunded when an item doesn’t sell.
Other eBay seller fees and rules, from eBay's own pages.
FeeAmountWhen it applies
International fee (US-registered seller, not using eBay International Shipping) 1.65% delivery address or buyer registered address outside the US; not charged on eligible items shipped with eBay International Shipping
Seller currency conversion charge 3.25% applied to the base exchange rate whenever eBay converts funds (listing on another eBay site, or payout currency differs from listing currency)
Below Standard surcharge 6% rises to 7% after 4+ consecutive Below Standard months; not charged to Above Standard / Top Rated
Below Standard surcharge, 4+ consecutive months 7% as above
Very High 'Item not as described' return rate surcharge 5% rises to 6% after 4+ consecutive months; not stacked with the Below Standard surcharge
Dispute (chargeback) fee $20.00 per dispute where the seller is found responsible, excluding sales tax
Refunds: per order fee is not credited (seller-caused cancellations, defect/damage returns, item not received, partial refunds, accepted disputes) Rule eligible fee credits are proportional to the refunded amount
Express payout (on demand to debit card or bank) $2.00 optional

Shipping comes on top

eBay’s fee is only part of what a sale costs you. The shipping label comes on top. See the cheapest way to ship for real USPS, UPS and FedEx prices by weight, and shipping software if you print a lot of labels.

Common questions

How much does eBay take from a sale?

In most categories eBay takes 13.6% of the total sale, including shipping and sales tax, plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less). On a $100 sale with free shipping and no tax, that is $14, so you get $86.

Does eBay take 20% of a sale?

Not on standard fees. Most categories pay 13.6% and the highest standard rate in eBay's no-Store table is 15.3% (books, movies and music). You can reach 20% or more once you add Promoted Listings, the international fee or a Below Standard surcharge, since each is charged on the total sale.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

Yes. eBay's final value fee is a percentage of the total amount the buyer pays, which includes the shipping you charge and the sales tax eBay collects. A higher shipping charge raises your eBay fee too.

How much are eBay listing fees?

Without a Store, your first 250 listings each month are free. After that each listing costs $0.35 in most categories. Stores get more free listings and lower insertion fees, shown in the Store table on this page.

Is it cheaper to sell on eBay with a Store?

Only above a certain sales level. In most categories a Basic Store lowers the final value fee from 13.6% to 12.7%. At $21.95 a month on yearly renewal, that pays for itself at about $2,439 a month in sales, by our estimate.

How much does eBay take from a $1,000 sale?

In most categories, $136.40: 13.6% of the $1,000 plus the $0.40 per order fee, with free shipping and no sales tax. You get $863.60. Shipping and sales tax the buyer pays raise the fee, since eBay charges its percentage on them too.

What are eBay fees on trading cards?

Trading cards and comics pay 13.25% up to $7,500, 2.35% above that of the total sale with no Store, plus the per order fee. A $50 card with free shipping costs $7.03 in fees.

How can I pay less in eBay fees?

Combine small items into one order or listing, since the $0.40 per order fee is charged once per order. Keep your account above Below Standard, use eBay International Shipping for buyers abroad, and open a Store only once your sales pass its break-even.
