Estimate from published prices: 50 invoices a month at $400 each, all paid by card online, monthly billing, no features required. Cheapest plan that covers the users. Apps whose card rate or user limit isn't published, and quote-only apps, are left out of this box (they're in the table below). Use your own numbers.
The short answer
- Card fees cost more than the software. At 50 invoices of $400 a month, all paid by card online, Jobber™’s 2.9% + 30¢ adds up to $595 a month. Its 5-user Connect plan is $199 a month. Most apps charge a similar card rate, so the fee is the big number whichever app you pick. See card fees by app. For card fees, software and leads added up for one 5-person business, see what a trades business really pays.
- How an app counts users decides your price. Jobber prices by team-size band, Housecall Pro caps users per plan, Tradify and Fergus charge per user. ServiceM8 charges by jobs a month with unlimited users on paid plans, and Service Fusion includes unlimited users. That’s why ServiceM8 tops the 5-person box above.
- 6 of the 19 apps publish no price: ServiceTitan, Workiz, FieldEdge, FieldPulse, Zuper, Simpro. We list them but can’t add them up, and we never guess.
- Check the contract before the price. FieldPulse has a 12-month term you can’t cancel early, Service Autopilot renews automatically for the same term, with an early exit fee and a 7% yearly price rise in its terms, and Zuper’s terms are non-cancellable. Most of the others are month to month.

How we picked
Software plus card fees on the hub's example jobs (50 invoices of $400 a month, paid by card), cheapest plan that covers the crew and every must-have. Our pick is the lowest cost option that has every must-have; within 10% of it, no contract, faster payouts and longer support hours win. Payment from a provider never changes it. How we pick
Just starting out, with fewer jobs? See what your first year costs below.
Just starting: what your first year costs
A new business runs fewer jobs, so the hub’s example numbers don’t fit. Here we price one person sending 15 invoices of $400 a month, all paid by card online, for the whole first year: intro prices for as long as each app says they last, then the regular price. Our must-haves for a new business: free plan or free trial with no card, month to month at the price shown and quotes, invoices and card payments on the plan.

- Card fees are the bigger cost. They come to $2,142 to $2,862 in the first year, more than the software at 7 of the 8 apps above. Check the card rate as closely as the plan price. See card fees by app.
- The cheapest Jobber plan: Core. Its page title says "Jobber Pricing: Plans Starting at $29/Month | Free Trial", but that price is for paying a year up front. Month to month, the first year is $546 with the intro offer:
| Jobber Core (1 user): how you pay | First year |
|---|---|
| Month to month $35 a month for 3 months, then $49 a month. "If you subscribe to Jobber on a monthly plan with no commitment, you can cancel at any time. Your subscription will end at the end of your current billing period." | $546 |
| 1-year commitment, billed monthly $24 a month for 3 months, then $39 a month. "your subscription has a 12-month minimum term, billed monthly. If you cancel during the year, your subscription will remain active and you'll continue to be billed monthly until the end of the 12-month term." | $423 |
| Paid a year up front $21 a month for 12 months, then $29 a month, all charged at the start. "you'll be billed for the full term at the start of your subscription. If you cancel during the year, you'll continue to have access until the end of your annual term, but your initial payment is non-refundable." | $252 |
- A free alternative to Jobber: ServiceM8 (1 user, 30 jobs per month, SMS 10c each, self-serve support). A paid plan is still needed once you pass the free plan’s limits.
Free trials test the top plan
Jobber’s and Housecall Pro’s free trials run on a higher plan than a new business usually buys, so features you set up during the trial can disappear when you pick a plan:
-
Jobber: 14 days on Grow
"For 14 days you get full access to all of Jobber’s features on the Grow plan" ... "no credit card required." Jobber
Grow for one person is $199 a month. The plan a one-person business starting out would buy is Core (1 user) at $49 a month, which doesn't include QuickBooks sync, GPS tracking and quote follow-ups. Before the trial ends, check that what you set up still works on Core.
-
Housecall Pro: 14 days on Max
"Enjoy full access to all Housecall Pro features on our MAX plan for 14 days, absolutely free" ... "no credit card needed to start!" Housecall Pro
Max for one person is $329 a month. The plan a one-person business starting out would buy is Basic at $79 a month, which doesn't include QuickBooks sync, maintenance agreements and GPS tracking. Before the trial ends, check that what you set up still works on Basic.

Which apps sync with QuickBooks, and on which plan
QuickBooks sync is the feature that most often forces a more expensive plan. The lowest plan with it at each app, and its monthly price:

Free field service software
Three apps have a free plan, each with a catch:
- ServiceM8 Free: 1 user and 30 jobs a month. Its paid plans start at $29 a month with unlimited users.
- Yardbook Starter: built for lawn care and landscaping only. On the free plan Yardbook adds 1% to online card payments, on top of Stripe’s fee.
- Connecteam Small Business Plan: free under 10 employees, but it’s a crew scheduling and time clock app. It doesn’t send quotes or invoices or take payments.
Joist has dropped its free plan. Most other apps offer a free trial instead (Jobber and Housecall Pro: 14 days, no credit card).
Plumbing, electrical and handyman software
These trades need quotes, a pricebook, scheduling and invoicing, which every priced app above includes on its base plan except where the QuickBooks table shows otherwise. Points to check:
- A pricebook (saved prices for parts and labor) is on every Housecall Pro plan, on ServiceM8 from the Growing plan, and on every Tradify and Fergus plan. Jobber’s pricing page doesn’t list it by plan.
- Electrical and plumbing contractors who also bid larger projects often need estimating tools that sit outside job management. Fergus and Tradify are built for trade contractors; Simpro targets larger commercial contractors (quote only).
- Handyman businesses running many small jobs should check ServiceM8’s job limits and per-invoice card fees, which matter more on small tickets.
Software by trade
Three trades need something the general answer doesn’t cover, so each has its own page with every app priced for that trade:
- HVAC software: maintenance agreements sit on a higher plan at several apps; the cheapest plan with them, for a 5-tech shop.
- Cleaning business software: recurring cleans, online booking and many part-time cleaners, priced at 10 and 20 people, with ZenMaid.
- Lawn care software: route planning by plan, free plans and contracts over the off season, with the landscaping apps (LMN, Aspire, RealGreen).
Remodelers and designers comparing Houzz Pro: Houzz Pro pricing. Paying for the jobs themselves? See what contractor leads cost.
If you only need quotes and invoices
Contractor invoicing apps cost less than full job management. Joist’s Basics plan is $10 a month for up to 5 documents a month, and Pro is $17 a month for unlimited quotes and invoices. Scheduling only comes with Joist Run at $100 a month. Joist’s card rate is 3.49% + 49¢ online, one of the higher rates we track, so check card fees before you send big invoices through it.
What field service management software does
Field service management (FSM) software runs the work a crew does at customers’ homes and businesses: taking requests, quoting, scheduling and dispatching jobs, sending invoices and taking payment, usually with a phone app for the people in the field. Search for the term and the top results are enterprise suites (IBM, Salesforce, ServiceNow) sold to large service organizations; the apps on this page are built for small trades businesses and publish what they charge, except the 6 quote-only ones.
Switching apps: what it costs to leave
If you already run an app, the saving from switching is the yearly gap below, minus whatever you still owe on a prepaid year or a minimum term. Month-to-month plans cost nothing extra to leave; a prepaid year at Jobber, Kickserv, GorillaDesk or Service Fusion isn’t refunded, so the best time to switch is at renewal. Export your customer list before you cancel.

Common questions
How much does field service software cost?
Published plans run from free (ServiceM8's 1-user plan, Yardbook's lawn care plan) to several hundred dollars a month. For most crews the bigger cost is card fees: at 50 invoices of $400 a month paid by card online, a 2.9% + 30¢ rate costs $595 a month, more than the cheapest 5-person plan at any app we track.
What is the best field service software for a small business?
It depends on your crew size and how many jobs you run. At our default numbers, ServiceM8 is the cheapest published option for 5 or 10 people because it prices by jobs, not people. For a solo owner, Jobber Core and GorillaDesk Basic tie. Put your own numbers in the calculator.
Is there free field service software?
Yes, with limits. ServiceM8's Free plan covers 1 user and 30 jobs a month. Yardbook's Starter plan is free for lawn care businesses but adds a 1% fee on online payments. Connecteam is free under 10 employees but has no quotes, invoices or payments.
Which field service software works with QuickBooks?
Most of them, but not always on the cheapest plan. Jobber starts QuickBooks sync on Connect, not Core. Housecall Pro starts it on Essentials, not Basic. Tradify, Fergus, ServiceM8 and Kickserv include it on every plan. The table on this page shows the plan and price for each app.
What is field service management software?
Software that runs the work a crew does at customers' homes and businesses: taking requests, quoting, scheduling and dispatching jobs, invoicing and taking payment, usually with a phone app for the field. Small-business apps like Jobber, Housecall Pro and ServiceM8 publish their prices; enterprise suites are sold by quote.
